Palghar Blast: Explosion at Illegal Firecracker Unit in Wada Leaves One Dead, Four Injured

Palghar: A powerful explosion at an illegal firecracker manufacturing unit in Konsai village of Wada taluka on Tuesday afternoon claimed one life and left four others seriously injured, officials confirmed. The blast occurred inside a makeshift unit operating from an old farmhouse covered with a tin shed. Authorities revealed that the unit was running illegally without necessary permissions. Teams from the Directorate of Industrial Safety and Health (DISH), along with revenue officials and the Palghar Superintendent of Police, visited the site soon after the incident. The deceased has been identified as Bhavesh Dilip Vavre, a resident of Jamghar in Wada. According to initial findings, the unit had been operational for nearly a month. Raw materials required for firecracker production were being transported daily, and local labourers were hired on a daily wage basis. Officials stated that highly explosive powder used in firecracker manufacturing was stored illegally within the premises, which likely triggered the blast. At the time of the incident, approximately 32 workers from nearby villages were present, many of whom were undergoing training. The injured were immediately rushed to Wada Rural Hospital for treatment. Three of them were later shifted to Gandhe Hospital, while one critically injured worker was referred to Bhiwandi Rural Hospital. Emergency response teams, including the fire brigade, police personnel, tehsildar, and chief officer, reached the location and carried out rescue and investigation operations. Authorities described the impact of the explosion as severe. In a tragic detail, officials confirmed that the force of the blast caused dismemberment of the deceased. The victim’s sister, who witnessed the aftermath, went into shock and was later treated and discharged. Palghar Superintendent of Police Yatish Deshmukh stated that an FIR has been registered against five individuals, including the landowner. Three accused — the landowner, the operator managing daily activities, and the unit owner identified as Narendra Singh — have been arrested. Police have also indicated that similar illegal operations were conducted earlier at the same location by a previous operator, before being taken over by the current accused. A case has been registered under sections related to culpable homicide and provisions of the Explosives Act. Investigations are ongoing. Local activists have raised concerns over the existence of multiple such illegal units in Wada, allegedly operating openly without strict enforcement action
